Wait, Have Keanu and Winona Been Married This Whole Time?

Keanu and Winona. They don’t even need last names, do they? Two icons of the 90s, albeit with very different career trajectories. They’re back together for the upcoming rom-com Destination Wedding, but it turns out that there might just have been a real wedding in their past.

Immortal Love

In 1992, Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves co-starred in Bram Stoker’s Dracula alongside Gary Oldman as the titular vampire. Winona played Mina Harker, caught up in a love triangle between the vampire and her fiancé Jonathan. Near the end of the film, after the vampire is finally laid to rest, a shell-shocked Mina and Jonathan, his hair gone grey, are hastily married.

According to Winona, that ceremony might have been legally binding.

Red Wedding

During a press junket for Destination Wedding, Winona revealed her theory that the on-screen romance was more than just for show. “We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

Apparently, director Francis Ford Coppola had hired a real Romanian priest and conducted an entire wedding ceremony between the two actors. They even said “I do,” making it a little more official than either of them expected. “We shot the master and he did the whole thing,” Winona said of the ceremony. “So I think we’re married.”

Quite a Gentleman

Keanu, of course, took everything in stride. When Winona reminded him that they’d been “married” on Valentine’s Day 26 years ago. “It’s lovely to see you again,” he quipped. “Oh my gosh, we’re married.”

There are more than a few fans who would love to see Keanu and Winona find happiness with each other. But it seems that they’re just old friends and costars—except in Romania. Frankly, somebody in Hollywood needs to option that story and give us a romantic comedy about friends who accidentally married each other when they were young and reconnect to find true love later in life.

Actually, hang on, I’m just going to go grab my notebook….

Two Stars on Different Orbits

In 1992, Keanu had made both Bill & Ted movies, plus the surfer-heist film Point Break. Although he’d been in a handful of more prestigious films, including My Own Private Idaho, he wasn’t yet a star. To be honest, his acting ability was something of a joke. He’d go on to star in Speed and then The Matrix, cementing his place as a reliable action star. More recently, audiences have come to appreciate him not just for his ageless good looks, but also for the intensity he brought to the revenge flick John Wick.

While Keanu’s star was on the rise, Winona Ryder had some trouble transitioning from Goth Girl Queen to more serious adult roles. She was the voice of Generation X in Realty Bites and a bold early feminist in Little Women (both 1994), but by 2001, she would be arrested for shoplifting and reveal a painkiller addiction. The public nature of her arrest led to her being all but blacklisted. A handful of roles continued to trickle in, but it wasn’t until 2016 that she seemed to be poised for a comeback. With Stranger Things, viewers remembered how much they loved Winona. Let’s hope that Destination Wedding proves to be the first of many leading roles for her. And hey, if she happens to fall for Keanu during this press tour, no one will complain.
