Everything You Need to Know About Matt Groening’s New Show

Between The Simpsons and Futurama, Matt Groening shattered the idea that cartoons are just for kids. Now he’s back with Disenchantment, and we cannot wait to get a look at it. Here are all the details about Matt Groening’s new show to tide you over until it premieres.

20. Not for Kids

The Wrap

Unlike the family-friendly Simpsons, Matt Groening’s new show is definitely not for kids. Disenchantment is geared toward adults, and since Netflix gives its creators a lot more leeway than broadcast television, expect Matt Groening to really let loose.

19. In Good Company

Disenchantment will join F Is for Family and the critically acclaimed BoJack Horseman on Netflix’s slate of original animated series. No word yet if Groening is aiming for the kind of prestige television that Raphael Bob-Waksberg achieved with BoJack.

18. A Long Wait

Know Your Meme

The series has been in the works for over a year and a half at Netflix. Animated shows have notoriously long lead times, since it takes so much work to create each episode. Luckily we don’t have too much longer to wait—keep reading to find out the premiere date!

17. An Offbeat Fantasy Realm

Matt Groening’s new show takes place in Dreamland, a rundown kingdom filled with quirky fantasy characters. This isn’t the first time he’s dabbled in fantasy—the Futurama one-hour special “Bender’s Game” saw the familiar cast transplanted into a Dungeons and Dragons scenario.

16. Our Heroine

The main character is Bean, a hard-drinking, tough-as-nails princess who looks more at home with a sword than a tiara. I’m guessing she doesn’t go to any tea parties with that attitude.

15. Abbi Jacobson Lends Her Voice

Format Magazin

Bean will be voiced by Abbi Jacobson, the co-creator and star of Broad City on Comedy Central. The feisty comedian seems like the perfect fit for the adventurous princess. Can I get a “YAS QUEEN”?!

14. Sidekick #1

Bean will be joined on her adventures by Elfo. He’s an elf, but not like the beautiful beings from Lord of the Rings. This elf is short, Yoda green, and looks a little bit like Bart Simpson.

13. An Academy Award Winner Joins the Cast

Nat Faxon will be voicing the sarcastic elf sidekick. Faxon is a veteran performer with dozens of credits to his name, and he’s also an Oscar-winning screenwriter! He co-wrote The Descendants, starring George Clooney.

12. The Most Mysterious Character

Matt Groening's New Show

Princesses and elves are pretty standard fantasy fare, but the character of Luci is something very different. We don’t know much about the odd little shadow character except that it’s described as Bean’s “personal demon.” I guess we’ll find out when Matt Groening’s new show premieres!

11. Eric Andre in the House

Luci will be voiced by Eric Andre, a comedian known for his surreal, often dark comedy on Adult Swim’s The Eric Andre show. He was also a regular on Man Seeking Woman and appeared on several other sitcoms.
